Sewer overflow monitoring

In our environment, everything is connected—especially when surface water is linked to groundwater. In the past, surface water was often used for sewage discharge. But over time, we’ve learned how important it is to keep them separate.

Yet in practice, contact between stormwater and sewage still occurs. This often happens during heavy rainfall, when sewer systems overflow and polluted wastewater enters surface waters and eventually the environment.

In the Netherlands alone, it’s estimated that over 15,000 overflow structures are in place, many of which discharge wastewater directly into the environment without first being treated. Monitoring these overflows is a critical part of effective water management. In many regions, this monitoring is required by law and serves as a valuable tool to:

  1. Improve understanding of sewer system performance
  2. Solve system bottlenecks with targeted actions
  3. Locate where and when overflows occur

We offer monitoring tools that collect key data points, which support environmental reporting and investigations. This includes:

  • Groundwater levels
  • Water quality
  • Level and flow data
