A new phase has begun for the ElliTrack Portal, with structured efforts now underway to introduce updates and innovations. These improvements are partly thanks to our newest team member, Niels van der Vlist, who recently joined and has already impressed us with his expertise and enthusiasm.

Meet Niels

Niels has an interesting background. He started his career as a graphic designer but quickly made the switch to web development.
Now, with more than ten years of experience in the field, he has joined Leiderdorp Instruments as a software developer, focusing on both front-end and back-end.
He considers himself a true full-stack developer.

When asked why he chose Leiderdorp Instruments, Niels said:

"At my previous jobs, I mostly worked for smaller organisations. At Leiderdorp Instruments, I got the opportunity to work on a large platform with loads of data, a real challenge to streamline properly."

His first project: updating the ElliTrack Portal

Niels jumped right in and got to work on an update of the ElliTrack Portal. Together with his colleagues Casper and Mark, he’s been working on improving and maintaining the platform. What’s special about this project is that the team recently started working in Scrum. Every three weeks, a new sprint goes live with bug fixes and new features. These updates are actively communicated to customers, making it easier to keep track of changes.

One of the latest additions includes a new FAQ section and a changelog page, where users can see exactly what has changed. Behind the scenes, internal tools that the team uses daily have also been improved. Niels shares his excitement:

"We’re currently working on the second sprint, which will be released on 6 June. Everything is on schedule, and we’re rolling out several major updates, including a new overview with built-in search functionality."

What's next for the Portal

Niels is already looking ahead. One of the long-term goals is to move to an API-based architecture. At the moment, data is exported via FTP or CSV, but the plan is to give users more control over how they retrieve their data. Another major project is a visual overhaul of the ElliTrack portal. This redesign won’t just improve usability, but it’ll also make the system easier to maintain in the long run.

Clear communication is key

Transparency is a key focus. In addition to the changelog, the team is also exploring the idea of sending newsletters to keep users informed about new developments. This idea is still in its early stages and will be shaped based on user needs.

"It’s important that customers understand what we’re doing and why certain changes are made. That not only increases satisfaction but also builds trust."
